Below are answers to some of the questions we receive most often.
Artificial Turf
What are the advantages of artificial turf in Florida?
Artificial turf provides a consistently green, attractive lawn without mowing, fertilizing, watering, or many of the
maintenance requirements associated with natural grass. It is particularly useful in areas where natural grass struggles
because of shade, heavy foot traffic, pets, poor soil conditions, or difficult maintenance.
A properly designed turf system can also provide excellent drainage, making it a practical option for Florida's frequent
rain.
Does artificial turf look and feel like real grass?
Today's premium artificial turf products are designed with multiple blade shapes, colors, textures, and thatch layers to
create a much more natural appearance than older synthetic grass products.
Florida Turf Design offers different turf products depending on the intended application, desired appearance, expected
traffic, pets, and budget.
Does artificial turf get hot in Florida?
Artificial turf can become warmer than natural grass when exposed to direct sunlight, just as pavers, concrete, pool
decks, and other outdoor surfaces can.
Product selection, surrounding landscaping, shade, infill selection, and other design considerations can help manage
surface temperatures. Turf can also be cooled quickly with water when necessary.
How long does artificial turf last?
The lifespan of artificial turf depends on product quality, installation, sun exposure, traffic, maintenance, and the
specific application. High-quality turf that is professionally installed and properly maintained can provide many years of
service.
We will discuss the manufacturer's specifications and applicable warranty for the particular turf selected for your project.
Does artificial turf require maintenance?
Yes, but considerably less than natural grass.
Periodic maintenance can include removing leaves and debris, brushing high-traffic areas, redistributing infill when
necessary, removing weeds around edges, cleaning pet areas, and inspecting seams and perimeter areas.
Professional turf cleaning and maintenance can also help preserve the appearance and performance of the installation.
Can weeds grow through artificial turf?
A properly prepared turf installation greatly reduces weed growth, but no outdoor system can guarantee that weeds will
never appear. Occasionally, airborne seeds can germinate in accumulated organic material on top of the turf or around
edges.
Proper site preparation and routine maintenance help minimize this issue.
Can artificial turf be installed around pools?
Yes. Artificial turf can be an excellent complement to pool decks and paver areas. It can create attractive transitions
between hardscape and landscape areas while eliminating grass clippings, mud, and many of the maintenance
problems associated with natural grass around a pool.
Can artificial turf be combined with pavers?
Absolutely. Combining artificial turf and pavers is one of our most popular design options.
Turf can be installed between large-format pavers, around patios and walkways, alongside pool decks, or as part of a
complete backyard renovation. The combination creates visual contrast while providing a practical, low-maintenance
outdoor space.
Artificial Turf Installation
How is artificial turf installed?
Although every project is different, professional turf installation generally includes removing existing vegetation and
unsuitable material, grading the area, preparing and compacting the base, addressing drainage requirements, cutting
and positioning the turf, joining seams, securing edges, installing the appropriate infill, and power brushing the
completed surface.
Proper preparation underneath the turf is just as important as the turf itself.
Why is the base underneath artificial turf so important?
The base provides stability, drainage, and a smooth finished surface.
Improper base preparation can contribute to depressions, movement, standing water, uneven areas, or premature
installation problems. Florida Turf Design evaluates site conditions before determining the appropriate preparation for
each project.
How do you handle drainage underneath artificial turf?
Drainage is considered during the design and preparation of every project. We evaluate existing grades, soil conditions,
runoff patterns, downspouts, surrounding hardscapes, and areas where water currently collects.
Depending on the property, the solution may involve proper grading and base preparation or additional drainage
systems such as French drains or other drainage components.
Can artificial turf be installed over concrete?
In certain applications, yes. Artificial turf can be installed over some existing hard surfaces, but the condition of the
surface and drainage must first be evaluated.
We determine whether the existing surface is suitable and what preparation or drainage modifications may be necessary.
Pet Turf
What is pet turf?
Pet turf is artificial grass selected and installed specifically for areas used by dogs and other pets.
The system is designed with drainage, durability, cleanability, and odor management in mind.
Is artificial turf safe for dogs?
Artificial turf products designed for pet applications are commonly used in residential yards, dog runs, veterinary
facilities, boarding facilities, apartment communities, and dog parks.
We can provide product specifications for the particular turf being considered so customers can review its
characteristics and manufacturer information.
How does dog urine drain through pet turf?
Pet turf systems are designed so liquids can pass through the turf backing and into the properly prepared drainage layer
below.
The effectiveness of the system depends not only on the turf itself but also on the base, grading, drainage, infill, and
installation method.
Will pet turf smell?
A properly designed pet turf system can significantly reduce odor problems, but pet turf still requires routine cleaning.
Waste should be removed promptly, and heavily used areas should be rinsed and periodically cleaned with products
appropriate for synthetic turf and pets.
Can you install pet turf for multiple dogs?
Yes. For homes with multiple dogs or high-use pet areas, we can recommend turf, drainage, base preparation,
and
maintenance practices appropriate for heavier use.
Is pet turf easier to maintain than natural grass?
For many pet owners, yes. Dogs can quickly damage natural grass by digging, running, creating worn paths, and
repeatedly using the same bathroom areas.
Artificial pet turf eliminates muddy paws and bare patches while providing a surface that can be cleaned and maintained
year-round.
Pavers
What types of paver projects does Florida Turf Design install?
We can incorporate pavers into a wide variety of residential and commercial outdoor projects, including
Patios
Walkways
Driveways
Pool decks
Courtyards
Outdoor living areas
Turf-and-paver designs
Commercial hardscapes
Landscape borders and transitions
Backyard renovations
Why choose pavers instead of poured concrete?
Pavers offer tremendous design flexibility through different colors, patterns, sizes, textures, and layouts.
Because individual units can be removed and replaced, certain repairs or access beneath the surface may also be
easier than with a monolithic concrete slab.
The best material ultimately depends on the application, budget, design, load requirements, and existing site conditions.
How are pavers installed?
A typical paver installation begins with excavation and site preparation, followed by grading and preparation of the
appropriate base. The base is compacted, the setting layer is prepared, and the pavers are installed according to the
selected pattern.
Edges are secured as appropriate, joints are filled with the specified joint material, and the finished surface is compacted
and cleaned.
The exact installation method depends on the application and site conditions.
Why is proper paver base preparation important?
The finished pavers are only as reliable as the system supporting them.
Proper excavation, grading, base material, compaction, drainage, edge restraint, and installation practices help minimize
settlement, movement, uneven surfaces, and other problems.
Can pavers be installed for driveways?
Yes. Pavers are commonly used for residential driveways, but driveway installations require appropriate preparation for
vehicle loads.
The base design, paver selection, edge restraints, drainage, and installation method are important considerations.
Can you install pavers around a swimming pool?
Yes. Pavers are an excellent option for pool decks because of their appearance, design flexibility, and ability to integrate
with other outdoor features.
Product selection is especially important around pools because surface texture, heat, drainage, maintenance, and slip
characteristics should all be considered.
Paver Repairs
Can you repair an existing paver installation?
Yes. Depending on the condition of the existing installation, Florida Turf Design may be able to repair sunken, uneven,
separated, damaged, or displaced pavers.
We first evaluate the underlying cause because simply repositioning the pavers may not solve a problem caused by
drainage, erosion, poor base preparation, or settlement.
Can individual damaged pavers be replaced?
Often, yes, provided compatible replacement pavers are available.
Exact color matching can sometimes be difficult with older installations because of discontinued products,
manufacturing variations, weathering, and fading.
Why are my pavers sinking?
Pavers can settle for several reasons, including inadequate base preparation, erosion, drainage problems, soil
movement, heavy loads, or loss of supporting material.
We evaluate the cause before recommending the appropriate repair.
Can you repair pavers around a pool deck?
In many cases, yes. We can evaluate uneven or damaged pool-deck pavers and determine whether resetting or
replacing affected areas is appropriate.
Paver Cleaning & Sealing
Should pavers be sealed?
Paver sealing can provide several benefits depending on the paver type and sealer used. These may include enhancing
color, making surfaces easier to clean, reducing staining, helping stabilize joint material, and providing additional
surface protection.
Sealing is not a substitute for proper installation or maintenance.
How often should pavers be resealed?
There is no universal schedule. The appropriate interval depends on the sealer, paver material, traffic, sun exposure,
weather, cleaning methods, and previous coatings.
We recommend evaluating the condition of the surface rather than automatically applying additional sealer on a fixed
schedule.
Do pavers need to be cleaned before sealing?
Yes. Proper preparation is extremely important.
Dirt, algae, stains, efflorescence, old coatings, or other contaminants can affect the finished result. The required
preparation depends on the condition of the existing surface and the sealing product being used.
Can you seal old pavers?
Potentially, yes. Existing pavers must first be evaluated to determine their condition, whether previous sealers are
present, and what cleaning or preparation is required.
French Drains & Drainage
What is a French drain?
A French drain is a drainage system designed to collect and redirect subsurface or surface water away from problem
areas.
A typical system may incorporate a trench, drainage aggregate, geotextile material, and perforated drainage pipe,
although the appropriate design depends on site conditions.
How do I know if I need a French drain?
Common signs of drainage problems include:
Standing water after rainfall
Persistently soggy areas
Water collecting next to patios or structures
Erosion
Washed-out landscaping
Water collecting around turf or pavers
Downspouts discharging into problem areas
Repeated settlement caused by water movement
We evaluate the property before recommending a drainage solution.
Do I automatically need a French drain under artificial turf?
No. Many turf installations can drain effectively through proper grading and base preparation.
A French drain or additional drainage system may be recommended when existing site conditions require additional
water management.
Can drainage problems damage pavers?
Yes. Poor water management can contribute to erosion, base movement, settlement, joint loss, and other problems.
For this reason, drainage should be considered as part of the overall hardscape design rather than after the project is
completed.
Can you connect downspouts to a drainage system?
Depending on site conditions and applicable requirements, downspout water may be incorporated into an overall
drainage strategy. The appropriate method and discharge location must be determined for the individual property.
Commercial Hardscapes
Does Florida Turf Design perform commercial projects?
Yes. Florida Turf Design can provide artificial turf and hardscape solutions for commercial and multifamily properties,
subject to the scope and requirements of the particular project.
What types of commercial properties can benefit from artificial turf and hardscapes?
Applications may include apartment communities, HOAs, offices, retail properties, hospitality properties, playground
areas, pet areas, courtyards, common areas, and other commercial outdoor spaces.
Can artificial turf handle heavy foot traffic?
Certain commercial-grade turf products are designed for higher-traffic environments. Product selection, base
construction, drainage, and maintenance become especially important in these applications.
Do you install commercial playground turf?
Yes. Playground systems may incorporate artificial turf along with appropriate impact-attenuating components or
padding when required by the design and application.
Commercial playground projects should be evaluated individually based on the project's specifications and applicable requirements.
Water Features
Does Florida Turf Design incorporate water features into outdoor projects?
Yes. Water features can be incorporated into certain landscape and hardscape designs to create a focal point and
enhance the overall outdoor environment.
What types of water features can be incorporated into a project?
Depending on the design, options may include decorative fountains, bubbling features, landscape water features, and
other custom elements.
Availability and installation requirements depend on the specific design and site.
Can a water feature be combined with artificial turf and pavers?
Absolutely. Water, turf, pavers, landscape materials, lighting, and other hardscape elements can work together to create
a cohesive outdoor environment.
Drainage and water management are particularly important when integrating these different materials.
Putting Greens
Can you build a custom backyard putting green?
Yes. Florida Turf Design can create custom artificial-turf putting greens designed around the available space and the
desired appearance and playing experience.
Can I choose the shape and number of cups?
Yes. Putting greens can be customized in shape, size, cup locations, fringe areas, and surrounding landscaping or
hardscapes.
Can a putting green be incorporated into a larger backyard renovation?
Yes. A putting green can become part of a complete outdoor design incorporating artificial turf, pavers, landscaping,
drainage, and other features.
Permits, HOAs & Project Approvals
Do artificial turf or paver projects require a permit?
Permit requirements depend on the type and scope of work and the authority having jurisdiction. Some projects may not
require a building permit, while other projects or
related work may require permits, engineering, inspections, or additional approvals. Florida Turf Design evaluates the scope of the project and can help identify applicable
requirements.
Does my HOA need to approve artificial turf or pavers?
If your property is governed by a homeowners' association,
architectural review committee, or similar association, approval may be required under the community's governing documents. We recommend obtaining required approvals
before construction begins.
Can Florida Turf Design help with an HOA or ARC submission?
Yes. When appropriate, we can provide project information such as product specifications, installation descriptions,
photographs, site information, and other materials that may assist the homeowner with an HOA or Architectural Review
Committee submission.
Final approval remains with the applicable association or authority.
Who is responsible for determining permit requirements?
Permit requirements are ultimately determined by the governmental authority having jurisdiction over the property.
Florida Turf Design can assist in identifying requirements associated with the work we are proposing.
Products & Warranties
Does artificial turf come with a manufacturer's warranty?
Many of the artificial turf products we install are offered with manufacturer warranties. The length, coverage, limitations,
exclusions, and claim procedures vary by manufacturer and product. Florida Turf Design will provide applicable
warranty information for the product selected for your project.
Are pavers covered by a manufacturer's warranty?
Warranty coverage varies by paver manufacturer and product line.
Where a manufacturer warranty applies, the manufacturer's written warranty determines the actual coverage,
limitations, exclusions, and claim procedures.
Is the product warranty the same as an installation warranty?
No.
A manufacturer's product warranty generally relates to qualifying defects in the material itself and is governed by the
manufacturer.
A workmanship warranty relates to qualifying installation workmanship and is provided according to the terms of the
contractor's agreement.
Does Florida Turf Design warranty its workmanship?
Florida Turf Design provides workmanship warranty coverage as specified in the customer's written service agreement
(5 years).
The applicable agreement should always be reviewed for the exact warranty period, covered workmanship, exclusions,
maintenance requirements, and claim procedures.
What is typically not covered by a manufacturer's warranty?
Coverage varies by manufacturer, but warranties commonly contain exclusions and limitations relating to improper use,
accidents, modifications, improper maintenance, abnormal conditions, external damage, or conditions unrelated to a
manufacturing defect.
Estimates, Design & Installation
Does Florida Turf Design provide free estimates?
Yes. Contact Florida Turf Design, LLC to schedule a consultation and free estimate for qualifying projects.
What happens during an estimate?
We discuss what you would like to accomplish, evaluate the project area, take measurements as needed, review existing
site and drainage conditions, discuss materials and design options, and identify important project considerations.
We can then develop an appropriate scope of work and proposal.
Can you help design my entire backyard instead of just installing turf?
Yes. Many of our projects combine multiple outdoor elements.
Instead of looking at artificial turf, pavers, drainage, putting greens, and other features independently, we can evaluate
how the different components can work together as one outdoor space.
Can you renovate an existing backyard?
Yes. We can evaluate existing outdoor areas and develop a plan that may incorporate removal or modification of existing
materials along with new turf, pavers, drainage, hardscapes, putting greens, or other features.
How long does installation take?
Project duration depends on the size and complexity of the project, site access, excavation requirements, materials,
weather, drainage work, inspections or approvals when applicable, and other conditions.
We provide a more realistic project timeline after evaluating the scope of work.
Do I need to be home during installation?
Not necessarily. This depends on access requirements and the particular project.
Before construction begins, we coordinate important details such as access, gates, pets, vehicles, irrigation, utilities,
material placement, and any other site-specific considerations.
What should I do before installation begins?
We will discuss project-specific preparation with you. Customers should make sure we have appropriate access to the
work area and disclose known irrigation systems, drainage systems, electrical lines, landscape lighting, private utilities,
or other site conditions that could affect construction.
Choosing Florida Turf Design
Why hire Florida Turf Design instead of separate turf, paver, and drainage companies?
Outdoor projects often involve systems that affect one another.
